Cathodic protection is an effective corrosion control method used to extend the service life of steel structures exposed to marine and corrosive environments. Commonly applied to sheet piles, pipe piles, quay walls, wharves, jetties, and other waterfront infrastructure, cathodic protection helps reduce steel corrosion by utilizing sacrificial anodes that corrode in place of the protected structure.

Typically used in conjunction with protective coatings, cathodic protection forms part of a comprehensive corrosion protection strategy. Zinc or aluminum sacrificial anodes are attached to the steel structure, creating a galvanic cell in which the anode corrodes preferentially, helping to protect the steel from rust and deterioration.
